Leslie Carr

As she was growing up, dogs were Leslie “Lee” Carr’s constant companions, and family trips to the San Diego Zoo created memories that made a lasting impression. It’s no wonder that, as an adult, Lee is passionate about animals and became a veterinarian.

With nearly four decades of veterinary expertise under her belt, Lee now owns and operates a canine sport training facility in Maryland. She also actively participates in dog agility competitions. That was where she met a fellow participant who introduced her to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and invited her on a safari trip to Tanzania.

“It was my first trip to Africa, and I went simply expecting to see some animals,” Lee says. “As I learned more about what AWF does, I just went, ‘Wow.’ There’s more going on in the background than I ever expected.”

A second safari to Rwanda and Uganda in summer 2023 gave Lee an even deeper understanding of what AWF is doing to support not only African animals but local communities as well.

“It’s incredibly impressive,” Lee says. “AWF not only preserves land for wildlife but also educates and employs local residents, ensuring access to essentials like running water.”

Lee was inspired by the preservation efforts she witnessed firsthand. In honor of all the work AWF does to promote conservation and sustainable development—and to perpetuate her deep love of animals—Lee decided to include a legacy gift to the AWF in her trust.

“It’s a contribution to the future of the earth,” Lee says. “AWF values people, the environment, and animals equally. By considering them together, we can protect our future.”
